St. George Tree Service works the trees around houses, right through the village and out into the South Dumfries country on either side. Some people ring about one limb over a conservatory. Others ring because a builder has just put a trench through the root plate of a maple that was here before the street was. Full insurance, arborists who do their own climbing, and no tree trimming priced until a person has stood beneath the tree with their head back.
Tree trimming here is not the same job it is four miles down the road, and the reason is underfoot. St. George sits on tens of metres of old glacial lakebed — heavy silt and clay, with stony till and moraine gravel folded through it. Trees hold differently on that than they do on the sand plains south of us, and they fail differently too.

The arborist who prices your tree trimming is one of the people who climbs it. Nothing is quoted off a photograph and nobody is sent to a tree that has not been seen.

Tree trimming and pruning in St. George happens against an unusually high local standard, because there have been commercial apple orchards on Howell Road for two centuries and orchard work is the most disciplined tree trimming there is.

Grinding is quoted on its own rather than bundled into the felling, since plenty of people are perfectly content to see the tree go and leave the stump where it is.

Tree trimming takes the deadwood out on our schedule instead of the tree's. Of everything tree trimming achieves, this is the part that actually prevents injuries — and the part most often left undone.
Tree trimming corrects structure while a tree is still young enough to answer. A competing leader removed at twenty years is fifteen minutes of tree trimming; the same fault at sixty is a cabling job or a removal.
Tree trimming puts light back down through the canopy onto the lawn and the beds underneath. On heavy shaded ground that is the single most common reason somebody books tree trimming here.
Somebody competent gets a proper look at the union, the collar and the base. Fully half of what regular tree trimming buys you is that inspection. Standing on the lawn with binoculars finds none of it.
Photographs flatten a tree. Thirty minutes underneath one does not, and neither that visit nor the scope which follows it carries a fee.
Under St. George there is something like forty metres of glacial lake sediment — fine silt and clay laid down in still water when the ice was melting back. Around and above it sit the Galt and Moffat moraines: stony, lime-rich till with pockets of fast-draining gravel through it. Between them those two make tree trimming here a different calculation.
That mix produces two opposite tree trimming problems on the same street. On the heavy silt and clay, water sits, oxygen is scarce below the top foot, and roots stay up in that top foot in a wide flat plate. On the gravel pockets, water drains away almost at once and the tree is drought-stressed by August even in a normal year.
Neither one produces a deep anchoring root. So the failure here is usually the whole plate tipping rather than the trunk snapping, and it happens on wet ground after a long soak, in wind that would not have moved the same tree in July. Tree trimming will not stop that, but it takes a great deal of the leverage out of it.
Survey work done for the village's own servicing study recorded seven forest community types in and around St. George, and they are most of what our tree trimming crew works on. Two of them are ash — a dry-fresh white ash forest and a sugar maple-white ash forest. That is not a small share.
The borer has been loose in this watershed since 2010. On its own holdings the conservation authority has since felled upwards of sixteen thousand ash, at a cost in the millions. Private gardens were never surveyed and never cleared, so what stands here now is the remainder of that same wave, much of it dead on its feet.
Dead ash behaves unlike any other deadwood. It dries quickly, turns brittle all the way through, and comes apart at the joints instead of breaking along a limb - and the joint is precisely where a rope puts its load. A standing dead ash is therefore bucket work, crane work, or a fell from ground level. What sets the figure is the machine required, not the trunk diameter, and ordinary tree trimming does not enter into it.
St. George is the County's designated growth village, and there are on the order of a thousand-plus homes planned around it over the next twenty-five years. That is the biggest threat to the mature trees in this village, it is slower and quieter than any storm, and no amount of tree trimming afterwards repairs it.
No amount of tree trimming afterwards fixes it, either. The County's own guidelines say it plainly: soil compaction is one of the leading causes of tree decline. On clay it is worse than on sand, because clay compacts harder and recovers slower. A machine parked under a maple for a fortnight does damage that shows up as crown dieback three summers later, by which time nobody connects the two.
The County publishes a tree protection zone table — under 10 cm diameter wants 1.2 m, 30 to 40 cm wants 2.4 m, over a metre wants eight centimetres of clearance for every centimetre of trunk. If you have a build going in near a tree worth keeping, get the protection fenced before the machines arrive, not after, and get the tree trimming done while there is still access. We will come and mark it out.
There have been apples on Howell Road for two hundred years. The Howell family were on that road by 1820 and the road carries their name; there is a second orchard next door to them growing something like twenty varieties between them.
That matters to a tree trimming company because orchard work is the strictest tree trimming there is. An orchard cuts to an open centre, keeps light on the fruiting wood, and does it in late winter every single year, because the crop tells them immediately if they got it wrong.
Garden trees get judged on a longer timescale, which is exactly why bad tree trimming survives here. Nobody notices a flush cut for fifteen years. One standard covers both: clear of the collar, onto a side branch capable of taking over, never leaving a stub.
The worst combination on this soil is a saturated autumn followed by a hard blow before the ground freezes. Clay holds that water, the plate loosens in it, and a broad crown becomes a lever with nothing to lever against.
Tree trimming will not save a tree once this has begun, but you can often see it starting. Soil cracked or heaved in an arc on one side of the trunk, a lean that was not there last year, or a gap opening between the trunk flare and the ground. Any of those is a same-week phone call rather than a tree trimming job for the spring.
Just north-east of the village there is a provincially significant wetland complex, most of it swamp, and the trees on ground like that are rooted in conditions that would kill an upland tree. They are also the ones that go over first when the water table is high and the wind gets up.
It should name the trees. Nobody can price "sort out the back garden". They can price "rear sugar maple, two lowest limbs shortened roughly two metres onto laterals, deadwood above 50 mm cleared throughout".
It should settle the debris. Chipping and hauling, blocking to firewood and stacking, or leaving it in lengths are three separate undertakings carrying three separate figures.
It should say who carries what insurance, in writing, from every company that quotes you.
It should list the exclusions. Grinding the stump, lifting fence panels to get in, and carting the timber away are the three that turn up later as somebody else's second invoice.
The County has designated individual trees in this area under its heritage by-law — there is a Camperdown elm on Beverly Street East in the village carrying a designation of its own, and a copper beech dated to the 1860s designated over in Mount Pleasant.
A designated tree is not a tree you leave alone. It is a tree that gets deliberate tree trimming: deadwood out on a cycle, weight kept off the long limbs, the base kept clear of fill and traffic, and a proper look at it every few years rather than every couple of decades.
If you have an old specimen tree, designated or not, the cheapest tree trimming you will ever buy is the visit that happens before something fails. Tree trimming booked afterwards is always the dearer of the two.
Height is the wrong opening question. What matters is where a vehicle can get to and what needs shielding while we work.
One sixty-foot maple takes an hour when there is open field round it, and the best part of a day when it stands a yard from a conservatory with a service drop threaded through the crown. Ontario-wide, a modest tree with room around it sits in the hundreds; large, dead or badly sited pushes a tree removal into thousands. Trimming a single tree lands between. Treat those as what the market does, not as a figure from us.
Grinding the stump is its own line. Storm callouts carry a premium over the identical job scheduled in daylight, for the obvious reasons.
A decay pocket at the base with fungal brackets around it. A new lean with the soil cracked on the high side. Several consecutive seasons of thinning and retreat in the upper crown. A union that has already split. An ash the borer has finished with.
None of those is a tree trimming problem. Treating them as tree trimming costs more in the end and buys nothing.
When a tree does have to come out, that is a decision rather than a failure — and it should be followed by putting something back that suits the space. The County is planting tulip trees, maples, oaks, elms and dogwoods across its own land for exactly that reason. Ways of reaching this crew are set out on the contact page.
Topping is off the menu. It is not tree trimming and we decline it, including when asked directly.
Live conductors are the utility's business, not ours. Nothing gets cut until they have attended and dealt with the line.
We do not quote tree trimming on a tree we have not seen.
We do not start cutting on a woodlot without checking what the County permits first. Brant regulates woodland cutting under its own by-law and a permit process, and a single garden tree is a different matter from a bush lot. Sitting close to that boundary, you will hear it from us, and we will hold the booking until the County has answered.
The whole property gets walked, not simply whichever tree prompted the call. On this ground tree trimming faults come in groups, because the trees share the same drainage and the same wind exposure.
We look hard at what is underneath the tree. What is under there governs the proportion that can simply be dropped against the proportion lowered on ropes, and it moves the price further than height ever does.
What arrives afterwards is a written tree trimming scope: each tree listed, the work against it, the destination of the debris, and the price. The visit and the quote cost nothing.
On the day the site is set up before a saw starts — cones down, ropes rigged, and everything fragile carried clear. The climbing comes after that, and the tree trimming runs from the top downward.
Everything small is chipped, the timber is blocked and either stacked or loaded, then the whole area gets raked through and blown clean. Done properly, tree trimming leaves no evidence on the grass at all.

Late winter for most tree trimming. Bare branches show the architecture, frost firms up a clay lawn enough to carry machinery without wrecking it, and wounds close fast once sap moves in spring. Oaks want handling separately. Keep cuts off them through spring and early summer, when a fresh wound draws the beetles that spread oak wilt. Deadwood, hangers and anything unsafe get dealt with whenever we find them.
Usually, if you act before the machines arrive rather than after. The damage is compaction and root severance inside the tree protection zone, and on the clay around St. George compaction is particularly hard to undo. Get the zone fenced to the County's own table, keep spoil and parking outside it, and have somebody look at the tree before, during and after. Trees killed on building sites almost always look fine until two or three summers later.
Because nobody should be climbing it. Emerald ash borer leaves the wood dry and brittle right the way through, and the failures come at the unions — precisely where a climber's rope and a rigging line load it. Bucket, crane, or felled where it stands: those are the three, and the machine on site is what the invoice follows. And it deteriorates further with every season the tree stands there.
A single garden tree inside the village normally needs nothing of the kind. The County's woodland regime and its Good Forestry Practices permit exist for woodlands. A garden specimen is a different matter. Simplicity ends at a bush lot, a group of trees, land under a development application, or ground close to water — and a provincially significant wetland sits on this village's doorstep. Anywhere close to that, check with the County first.
Your choice, and it is three separate prices on the quote. Brush goes through the chipper by default. Wood can be cut short and piled wherever suits you, taken off the property completely, or left in lengths should you have a use in mind.
