A mature shade tree on clay usually needs tree trimming every five to seven years. Growth is slow on wet ground, so there is rarely enough new wood to justify a tree trimming visit any sooner.
Trees standing on the gravel pockets run short of water by mid-summer and build up dead wood faster. A shorter tree trimming cycle of three to five years suits them better.
February and March suit tree trimming better than any other months. With no foliage in the way the framework of the tree reads clearly, and frost stiffens a clay lawn enough that equipment crosses it without leaving ruts.
Oak is the one exception, and we trim it only while it is dormant. Cut an oak while the weather is warm and the wound draws in beetles carrying oak wilt, which is fatal to the tree.

The damage comes from compacted soil and cut roots. Clay compacts harder than sand and recovers more slowly, so an excavator parked under a maple for two weeks can cause the crown to die back three summers later. Tree trimming cannot fix that, so the tree needs to be assessed before the machines arrive.
The County publishes protection distances, and they are worth knowing before any digging starts. A trunk under four inches across needs four feet of protected ground. Between twelve and sixteen inches, it needs eight feet. Past three feet across, the rule is eight inches of clearance for every inch of trunk.

You should, and it is far better to act before the machines arrive. Compacted soil and cut roots inside the protection zone kill trees about three summers later, so nobody connects the two events. Fence the zone, keep parking and soil piles outside it, and have the tree looked at first.
It helps a great deal. Ice and wind both act on the outer crown, and a lighter crown carries less load. Trees that have had regular tree trimming come through a bad November far better than trees that have been left alone for twenty years.
